Crown Molding - Attach to ceiling?

Posted by matt_r (My Page) on

How do you anchor the crown molding to the ceiling when the ceiling joists run parallel with the wall (crown molding)? I can anchor the bottom into the wall studs, but will liquid nails be OK and run a bead along the top of the crown molding? Unfortunately, the joist runs too far away from where the wall/ceiling meet.

This is just one of the reasons why ceiling joists normally have strapping applied to their bottoms with cleats, if necessary, at wall/ceiling intersections.

Not sure what you mean? But with the width of the crown molding will bring the molding out past any wood of the joists (hollow area between 2 joists).

Easiest fix, IMHO, would be to add a wood nailer(backer) along those two walls.

Then fasten the top of the crown to that nailer.

First, you need to discover what is supporting the ceiling.

Liquid nails will work fine, if you anchor the bottom to the studs, the molding will never move in your lifetime. Use phenoseal latex caulk to fill any voids between the molding and the ceiling/wall.

"First, you need to discover what is supporting the ceiling." This makes no sense. Crown molding reaches out into the ceiling 3 or 4 or greater inches depending on the crown molding size. There is 16" between joists, so the poster is saying his molding is in this void area so he cannot nail the top of the crown molding into anything other than sheetrock.

Hi pete p ny why phenoseal latex caulk? I am replacing all the window and door casings in my house and any and all helpful hints are appreciated.

I just like it. I think it is the best quality product to fill voids you will paint over. I used others, and they are not as good. It is easy to work with and paint goes over it very well.It cleans up easy with a damp sponge. All my casings are white, so I use white colored phenoseal. Any cracks between casing sections or between the casing and wall should be caulked because they will be hard to fill with paint and cracks will re-appear. It will remain flexible so it will not crack (like joint compound).

Anchoring to the studs should be more than adequate.

Just because the trim touches the ceiling does not mean it need fastening to the ceiling.

Any quality acrylic caulk 9not the $3 a tube stuff) will fill any ceiling gaps for painting.

Hi pete p ny it's claga thanks for the advise on the phenoseal latex caulk. I live in Massachusetts and the house dries out from heat during the winter months and I found I am getting some voids and cracks were I've used DAP joint/spakle compound.
do you think it would be necessary for me to dig out the compound at the miters before filling with the phenoseal latex caulk?
thanks again
