heater is running on its own

my hayward h400 pool heater has a mind of its own. it runs regardless of the remote setting. It was on spa mode on the manual setting. should it be on standby? does the manual setting on the heater over-ride the remote? My gas bill is going to be painful. I woke up last night and my back yard was all steam.

is there not a separate shut off valve next to heater that you could just turn off for the time being?

Thanks, I did shut it off until my PB came over. turns out the pool heater was set at 80 at the unit which trumps the remote. He turned off the temp setting at the unit and therefore the remote will control it.

What? Usually the heater thermostats are set to max and the remote over rides. Sure you don't have a bad sensor?

I really don't have a clue because I have not had time to even open the manual. My wife did the pool school because I was working and I am sure she was day-dreaming about 30 seconds into it. I am trusting my PB 100% on this one and he has been great on everything else so far. It is a hayward unit with Hayward smart box and remotes. I am off today so I will play with it some to make sure it is working. If it is not working, I will ask him to swap out the sensor.

cascade, I believe both ways are available with the Universal series.

OK, maybe I'm talking outta my butt. I'm not a hayward guy. Sorry.
