 o
glass tile for pool waterline

Posted by california4 (My Page) on

we are picking out tile for our pool water line. we have been told to stay away from glass tiles as they 1) fail often (need special expansion joints during installation) and 2) are hard to maintain and keep clean.

any input would be very much appreciated.

I would agree..most are smaller sizes which means more grout which means more issues down the road...and a PAIN to regrout!

Glass tiles can be fine if properly installed. My suppliers have removed many of their glass tiles from the "suitable for pools" list because of the way the mesh backing is affixed to the tiles. Numerous failures, but none of mine have failed.

Glass tile failure is almost always due to improper installation. One of the most critical yet seldom done parts of the installation is sealing the area where the glass tile is installed. Another common mistake is with the thin set and grout installation. Thin set and grout have a 21 day curing time, this is also something which is seldom followed but yet critical!

Every manufacturer provides installation instructions which should be followed to the "T" if followed you should have no problems!

Good luck,
Cip

It depends on the area, and climate. Glass expands and contracts at a completely different rate, than ceramic tiles, which makes them more prone to popping off.
