Any genealogy buffs out there?

| I was wondering if you had any tips for me. I'm trying to find out the names of my great-grandparents. My grandfather's birth record was lost in a fire at the Galveston Courthouse. My Great-grandmother was supposed to be a Native American and I would just really love to know what her name was. I don't know my great-grandfather's name, either, just his last name. Anyone who would know is gone now.
Thanks! |

| I would start by trying to find your grandfather in the census. I have a subscription to ancestry.com so I can't say if you can access their census for free or not. Genealogical libraries should also have copies of the census. I will say that Texas is one of the easiest states to deal with when trying to get genealogical information. You can find a lot of death certificates for Texas on the Latter Day Saints web site. A death certificate usually gives parents names. |

| Census records are a great place to start. Hopefully the last name you are looking for is uncommon. |

| The last name is Johnson!! I have not found any census records for them. I saw a place that listed census information for 1910, which would have been perfect as he was born in 1903, but it was listed by address and I have no idea where they lived. I have never seen a marriage certificate either in all my searches. I did subscribe to ancestry.com for a while until it looked like I had found all I could. I'll check the LDS website. Thanks! |

| Oh, sorry, his death certificate (my grandfather's) didn't have his parent's names. |

| Your grandfather's death certificate will have his parents name listed. Try that. |

| if by chance you know where your grandfather was buried or the mortuary, they obtain quite a lot of information from of the passed person...the gentleman where my mother was taken asked all sorts of questions... ancestry.com gives out less information than in years past and charges quite a bit for membership... |
