Croutons or no?

Posted by angelaid (My Page) on

I used to not like them because I'd always had the store bought kind and they were too big and too hard. Had homemade at a restaurant finally and loved them. Need to learn how to make them at home. Tried it once and they were just "okay"
I've got a big zipper bag in the freezer I've been tossing odds and ends of bread pieces in for my next attempt.

I just cut bread up and toss with olive oil, garlic powder, oregano and salt and bake in the oven at 350 or less for a few minutes till they are golden.

You can really add whatever spices you want. We love the homemade ones!

Always made my own croutons! So much better than store bought hard ones.

THEN, I would cut bread cubes into whatever size.

Melt butter in my cast iron skillet

Toss them in and stir until all sides are coated with butter. Sometimes added garlic powder.

Cook until crisp!

NOW, I think I would make them with half butter and half olive oil.

No.....have never liked them.

I will eat a few but prefer my salads to be all veggies. I would rather have my bread on the side.

I can't stand "rocks" in my salad! Don't want to break my teeth! LOL

DH loves them and I can't see what the heck is so good about them.

I use store bought croutons. they come in smallish sizes so they're not always like coulders.

Yep, I love the garlicky ones! Outback steakhouse has the best ones I've ever eaten. I ask for extras. But I wish I didn't like them so much as I know they negate some of the good nutrition of a salad!

Yuck, I don't know why anyone would buy hard store bought croutons. I've always made my own. I save the ends and extras of french bread, rolls, etc. Toss with as little butter as possible and some garlic salt. Mmmmmm

I refer croutons in my soup.

Good timing for this post. I bought a loaf of rye bread to make Patti-melts sor Saturday supper, I made Hubs ham & cheese on rye sandwiches for lunch yesterday, and being the rye bread is so much more expensive than "regular" bread, I don't want to waste the odds & ends, so I plan to make rye croutons. I'll use a little olive oil, some garlic powder and a little salt, then bake till crisp. I like croutons if they are tender crisp, not hard little rocks. Dottie

I like croutons but I hear they are not very good for you (due to the butter, etc) so I prefer not to have them on my salad. I DO love a good feta on my salads though!

Croutons are a must in our house. I was making my own for a while and although it's so simple, it was one more thing I had to do around the house, so I went back to buying them. There is quite a bit of difference between brands. I stick to buying Marie Callender's Butter and Garlic croutons.

I don't like the large hard croutons and pick them out of a prepared salad! I do buy the Old London brand; they are thin rounds and very crispy and good.
