I live in a NYC apt and don't want to install a big window air conditioner. Does anyone have any experience with portable ac units? DeLonghi, Haier, Sharp, and other companies make them now, but there aren't a lot of reviews out there. The living room where I would like to use a portable AC unit is 13x21.5 feet and is on the sunny side of the street. Thanks for any comments!
I had a friend who bought one but she really didn't like it because it had a pan of water that needed to be emptied quite often - more than once a day in humid conditions. It also had a hose at the back (similar to a dryer) that needed to be vented to a window. NOT very attractive at all in a room unless there's a place you can hide it well.
We had a Royal Sovereign Portable Air Conditioner.
It worked ok but was noisy when it changed cycles. If we had to do it over again, we would buy a Haier instead. I've seen them at Target, they are less expensive as well. See comments (link below) from those who have owned them.

I have an Amcor Plasma and it's been great. Yes, it has a hose, but it also has a system to "atomize" the condensation out the hose - so no pan to empty!
